Between the ages of 18 and 22 nearly three quarters of American youths leave the church. By age twenty nine, 80% of the church population will be “disengaged” from the church according to the Barna Group and Drew Dyck. There can be an argument that it is the world we live in, and our leaders are not Godly, which is what is leading to this downward spiral. And there may be some truth in that.
I think WE, the “Christians” and the Church are to blame.
Over the last several weeks, on social media and in the news most of what I hear from the “Christians” is anger, hatred, and judgment.
Let’s look at the Syrian refugees. We should not shelter refugees because it is unsafe. Because if it weren’t for immigrants there would be no terrorists or rapists in our country…right Trump? I realize we need to have a system and security in place before we let thousands more people into our country. But is really not denying them a refuge what Jesus taught?
Matthew 25:40 says, “The King will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it for me.”
Shall we also look at Kim Davis and her numerous supporters who do not support gay marriage. I respect her religious beliefs. What I have a hard time swallowing is the vitriol that comes from her supporters. The backlash at the POTUS, the Supremes and the LGBT community. Is the hatred and discrimination at them an okay kind of sin?
John 8:7 So when they continued asking him, He lifted himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
I have a friend who recently separated from her husband. They went to church as a family for years. She volunteered her time, watched kids in the nursery, was a respected member of the congregation. She kindly agreed to let her husband “have” their former church when they split. How many of her “Christian” friends and “Church family” have reached out to her? ONE. Only one. Not even the pastor. Last I checked that is not how we treat our ” family”.
And it’s also not what Jesus taught…or lived.
Y’all who did Jesus call? Tax collectors, prostitutes, divorcees’, …SINNERS. Every one.
John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye LOVE one another; as I have loved you, that ye also LOVE ONE ANOTHER. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
If ye have love one to another, that is how men will know that you LOVE Jesus. Not by judging, or Obama bashing, or professing that your sin is not as bad as someone else’s sin, or For the Love, discriminating against people.
“Do not shine so that other’s can see YOU, shine so that THROUGH you, others can see HIM.” C.S.Lewis
Fellow Christ lovers and Church, shall we try to do this? I do not want my boys to be in that 80%.
